Position Characteristics
The successful candidate will also be responsible as the
winemaker at Fresno State Winery, the University’s 10,000 case
bonded winery and instructional facility. As an official
representative for Fresno State Winery, close and effective
interaction with the grape and wine industries, university
community, and public are expected. The successful candidate will
be expected to supervise student interns and coordinate classroom
projects. The successful candidate will be given a twelve- month
assignment. Willingness and ability to work in a collaborative
environment and to complete tasks on time are essential
characteristics of the person filling this position. Specific
assignments will depend on department and Fresno State Winery
needs. Outcomes assessment and service learning are important
components of the university curriculum. The successful candidate
will be expected to work cooperatively with faculty and staff in
the department, college and university, as well as with grape and
wine industry representatives.
Academic Preparation
An earned Master’s degree in Food Science, Fermentation Science,
Enology or a closely related discipline from an accredited
institution is preferred. At the time of appointment, the
successful candidate, if not a U.S. citizen, must have
authorization from the bureau of Citizenship and Immigration
services to work in the United States.
Teaching Or Other Experience
Experience in wine production operations and management is
required. Proven leadership skills, a demonstrated ability to
manage wine production operations as well as a demonstrated
ability to fiscally manage and build the assets of a comparable
volume business, is essential. Understanding of viticulture,
winemaking, wine tasting, and successful interaction with the
public are all considered to be helpful.
Candidates are expected to demonstrate a commitment to teaching excellence in wine production at the four-year university level. All candidates must demonstrate strong oral and written communication skills. The successful candidate must have the ability to work effectively with faculty, staff and students from a diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
