Viticulture Instructor / Vineyard Manager

This position is responsible for maintaining the college vineyards in collaboration with the V & E Program Director. In addition, this position includes a teaching load of 3- 9 credits per semester (and possibly one course during summer) depending upon demand and time availability. Finally, the position will assist in research and extension duties for the Kansas grape and wine industry as well as workshop teaching/hosting.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
1. Collaborate with V&E Department to manage and perform
day-to-day activities at HCC Vineyards year around.
2. Maintain vineyard equipment and manage vineyard
students/interns. Report any major maintenance needs or equipment
abnormalities to V&E Program Director.
3. Teach up to 3-9 credits of courses each semester and
potentially one course during the summer. Conducting field
workshops may count as partial credit hour teaching load.
4. Serve as a vineyard extension agent including consulting for
the Kansas grape and wine industry and attendance at some
national industry conferences.
5. Assist with technical information pertaining to curriculum
review and development within the department and at VESTA Annual
Summit.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsible for supervision of students in class setting. May supervise student workers/interns. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s Degree or higher in viticulture, horticulture,
enology, or related field required.
Master’s Degree preferred. Experience working in a vineyard is
essential.
Experience with hybrid grape varieties and mechanized vineyard
operations preferred.
Computer literacy required.
Must be able to operate tractors and other equipment associated
with vineyards.
Must be able to operate with a minimum of supervision.

PROGRAM INFORMATION
The HCC V&E Program is located in Wamego, KS (www.visitwamego.com).
HCC currently has 5000 vines planted, 500 of which are a trial
plot. The College has a licensed, bonded winery on the Wamego
Campus. The program is managed by Scott Kohl, who grew up on a
farm in western Kansas.
HCC V&E offers degrees and certificates in both Viticulture
and Enology as well as serves as the Kansas member of VESTA
(www.vesta-usa.org).
