ASEV’s objectives to encourage and support education and research can be easily identified through our wide range of awards granted to those who have demonstrated meritorious accomplishments.The Society’s outreach extends from granting scholarships and outstanding presentation awards at the National Conference to deserving students enrolled in enology and viticulture academic programs, to exceptional researchers through our Best Paper Awards in the American Journal of Enology and Viticulture. The ASEV Awards Committee also recognizes one exceptional individual annually for his or her contributions to the Society and/or the wine and grape industry overall.

Best Paper Awards from the American Journal of Enology and Viticulture

Each year, the ASEV Best Paper Awards Committee completes an evaluation of all research papers published in the American Journal of Enology and Viticulture for the prior year. The committee selects one paper in the field of enology and one in the field of viticulture that is deemed outstanding in its content and a substantial contribution to the field.

Selected students are recognized with these awards each year based on the content and quality of their oral or poster presentations at the Society’s Annual Meeting/National Conference in June. We are indebted to our sponsors who have provided generous and consistent support over these years.

ASEV Merit Award

The purpose of the ASEV Merit Award is to recognize outstanding individual achievement in the field of enology or viticulture. The area of achievement or excellence shall be in the field of education, technology, research, management, public relations or any discipline directly or indirectly related to enology or viticulture.

ASEV Scholarship Programs

The American Society for Enology and Viticulture annually awards numerous scholarships to students pursuing a degree in enology, viticulture, or in a curriculum emphasizing a science basic to the wine and grape industry.

Honorary Research Lecture

The honorary research lecturer is granted to an individual with a current national or international reputation in his or her field of research who is also actively involved in scientific research. He or she may or may not be a member of the Society. The Awards Committee or Program Committee recommends a proposed research lecturer to the Board of Directors. The Board will select an honorary research lecturer from these recommendations by vote. The Board of Directors need not select a research lecturer each year.

JF Guymon Lecture

The JF Guymon Lectureship was created in 1979 by Jim Guymon’s family with memorial contributions made after he passed away. Professor Emeritus Guymon was an enologist who devoted 38 years to teaching, research and service in the area of brandy production and wine biochemistry. This lectureship fund was created for use by the Department of Viticulture and Enology at the University of California, Davis.
