A 100% time, Postdoctoral Research Scholar position in grape berry chemistry is available at the Department of Viticulture and Enology of University of California Davis. The primary responsibility of this position will be to conduct studies that will be useful for generating information on phenolic content and composition of grape berry as affected by cultural practices and applied irrigation amounts in vineyards. Current studies include projects on vineyard mechanization, canopy management, irrigation scheduling, mitigating vine balance, assessing net carbon assimilation of the grapevine as they affect grape berry phenolic content and composition.

Early Mountain Vineyards is seeking interns for the 2016 harvest. Internships start August (TBD) and end approximately early November or December (season dependent).

Job responsibilities will include: ​

The responsibility of the candidate is to oversee and/or participate in all aspects of research projects: ordering equipment and supplies, designing sampling protocols, overseeing field sample and data collection, conducting low molecular weight phenolic analysis using reverse-phased high performance liquid chromatography and other laboratory analyses, communicating with growers, writing reports, and preparing manuscripts for refereed journal publication. Supervision and interaction with graduate and undergraduate students working in the project is also expected.

Requirements:

  • Ph.D. degree in Environmental Chemistry, Horticulture, Plant Biology, Plant Physiology, or a related field will be considered.
  • Candidates should have skill and an understanding of production viticulture, grapevine biology, and reverse-phased HPLC methods.
  • Proven work ethic, publication record, leadership, and team building skills.
  • A valid California driver’s license.

Salary Range:

Commensurate with Postdoctoral Experience.

Dates of Employment:

Available immediately with an initial appointment length of one year, with possibility of reappointment based dependent on mutual agreement and availability of funding.
