Assistant Professor of Plant Physiology
Department of Viticulture and Enology
University of California
One Shields Avenue
Davis, CA 95616
The Department of Viticulture and Enology, in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, at the University of California, Davis, invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Plant Physiology.
This is an academic year (9‐month), Assistant Professor tenure‐track position with teaching, research, outreach/engagement and service responsibilities and includes the expectation that the appointee will conduct mission‐oriented research and outreach/engagement of relevance to the California Agricultural Experiment Station (http://www.caes.ucdavis.edu/research/aes).
Responsibilities:
The primary research mission of the Department of Viticulture and
Enology is to produce the innovations that will advance the
understanding of wine and grape quality, and sustainability of
production. To advance that mission, the Department seeks a new
faculty member who has strong research expertise in the area of
plant physiology with an aim towards solving practical problems.
The appointee will establish a competitively funded research
program focused on grapevine physiology, integrating research
approaches from the genetic, biochemical, and cellular levels to
the whole-plant scale. A strong background in plant physiology,
plant ecophysiology, plant biochemistry, or plant molecular
biology is required, as well as a clear understanding of the
impacts of environmental conditions on plant performance. The
goal of this position will be to help develop novel cultural
practices to optimize crop yields and quality based on 1) key
traits that increase resource use efficiency and 2) models
predicting how environmental changes alter future management
practices. It is expected that this position will utilize modern
and novel research tools and approaches directly or through
departmental collaboration to develop a mechanistic understanding
of plant responses to management practices.
The appointee will be responsible for teaching undergraduate and
graduate courses in Grape Physiology and Viticulture and Enology.
Depending on the academic background of the appointee, we would
expect the candidate to teach courses such as VEN 110 (Grape
Physiology), VEN 115 (Grape Production), and VEN 101A-C
(Viticultural Practices). Participation in and development of
public outreach and/or community engagement programs, and
performance of departmental and university service is expected.
This position is expected to work with Cooperative Extension
specialists and advisors, partners in allied industries or other
appropriate public stakeholders.
Qualifications:
Ph.D. in plant physiology, plant ecophysiology, plant
biochemistry, plant molecular biology, or related fields. No
previous experience in viticulture is specifically necessary, as
long as the candidate’s experience is relevant to solving current
problems related to production of grapes. Post‐doctoral
experience is preferred. Evidence of research excellence is
expected. The candidate should have the ability to develop and
instruct undergraduate and graduate courses and the ability to
develop and conduct extramurally funded research in problems
related to grape and related crop production.
Salary:
Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Applications:
Application materials must be submitted at the following website:
https://recruit.ucdavis.edu.
The position will remain open until filled. To ensure
consideration, applications should be received by 23:59 PDT
February 1, 2018. Required applications material includes: 1)
curriculum vitae including publication list, 2) copies of up to
three publications, 3) transcripts if the applicant is within
five years of Ph.D. degree, 4) statement of research
accomplishments, 5) statement of teaching accomplishments and
philosophy, 6) statement of future research plans relevant to
plant physiology, 7) Statement of Contributions to Diversity, and
8) the names, addresses, including e-mail, of four professional
