The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) at Cornell
University is located in the scenic Finger Lakes wine region of
New York State, and its interdepartmental Viticulture and Enology
(V&E) bachelor’s degree program is unique among U.S. schools
east of the Rocky Mountains. The V&E major was established by
CALS in 2008 to address the needs of the rapidly growing Eastern
and Midwestern US grape and wine industries, including the
approximately 350 wineries in New York. The V&E teaching
program complements CALS’ long-standing reputation for excellence
in research and extension on fermentation science, viticulture,
and related fields. The program currently has about 30
undergraduates in the major, another 30 completing the minor, and
provides instruction to over 600 students per year across a range
of survey and specialized courses.
