Kristen Barnhisel Begins Term as ASEV President
Kristen Barnhisel, winemaker, white wines, at J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines, began her second non-consecutive term as ASEV president on July 1. Barnhisel previously served as president in 2019-2020 and returns to lead the Society as it continues strengthening connections among researchers, educators and industry professionals. Joining Barnhisel on the 2026-2027 leadership team are First Vice President Federico Casassa, Second Vice President Leticia Chacón-RodrÃguez, Secretary-Treasurer Lise Asimont, Science Editor Markus Keller and Technical Program Director Hans Walter-Peterson. ASEV National Conference Brings New Energy to Boise
The 2026 ASEV National Conference brought the wine and grape community together in Boise for four memorable days of research, professional connections and celebration. Held June 15–18 at the Boise Centre in Boise, Idaho, the joint conference between the American Society for Enology and Viticulture (ASEV) and the ASEV Eastern Section marked an exciting milestone for both organizations. Award Nominations Due August 1
Help ASEV recognize individuals whose work has made an important contribution to enology, viticulture and the wine and grape industry. Nominations for the ASEV Merit Award and The Anita Oberholster Award for Extension Excellence are due August 1. The Merit Award recognizes distinguished achievement in areas such as education, research, technology, management and industry service. The Extension Excellence Award honors university extension professionals who translate technical knowledge and research into practical tools, education and programs for the industry. ASEV Recognizes 2026-2027 Scholarship Recipients
ASEV proudly recognized 20 students with scholarships supporting their education in enology, viticulture and related sciences. George Zhuang of the University of California, Riverside, received the ASEV Presidents’ Award for Scholarship in Viticulture. Holley Eaton of Brock University received the Dennis Martin Scholarship as the top enology scholarship recipient and Taran Rowles of The Pennsylvania State University received the Mike Vail Scholarship as the top viticulture recipient. ASEV recognized six students for outstanding research presentations delivered during the 2026 National Conference. Viticulture awards went to Taran Rowles of The Pennsylvania State University for oral presentation, Grace E. Lilly of Oregon State University for poster presentation and Anugya Bhattarai of the University of Tennessee for flash talk.
