OSU Professor and Director of the Oregon Wine Research Institute James Osborne Named Recipient of The Anita Oberholster Award for Extention Excellence

Recognizing research-driven extension work that has supported winemakers across Oregon

DAVIS, Calif., April 17, 2026 — James Osborne, PhD, director of the Oregon Wine Research Institute and Professor and Enology Extension Specialist at Oregon State University, Corvallis, has been named the recipient of The Anita Oberholster Award for Extension Excellence, presented by the American Society for Enology and Viticulture (ASEV).

The award, recently renamed in honor of Dr. Anita Oberholster, recognizes individuals whose extension programs and applied research have made a meaningful impact on the wine and grape industry.

Osborne’s work focuses on helping winemakers better understand and manage the role of microorganisms in wine production. His research on organisms such as Brettanomyces, non-Saccharomyces yeasts and Oenococcus oeni has contributed to improved approaches to fermentation management, wine quality and stability. His earlier work on malolactic fermentation and microbial interactions continues to inform industry best practices.

In his role as Oregon’s statewide enology extension specialist, Osborne delivers technical workshops, seminars and hands-on programming designed to translate research findings into practical application. His work has supported more informed decision-making across Oregon wineries and strengthened the connection between university research and industry needs.

“Dr. Osborne’s work exemplifies the role of extension in bridging fundamental research and commercial application,” said Dr. Beth Chang, chair of ASEV’s Extension Excellence Award Committee. “His research on wine microbiology, combined with a highly effective extension program, has provided winemakers across the United States with practical tools to better understand and manage microbial impacts on wine quality. His contributions have strengthened both production outcomes and industry-wide knowledge transfer.”

Through his teaching and mentorship at Oregon State University, Osborne also contributes to the development of future enology and viticulture professionals, extending his impact across the industry.

Osborne will be presenting, “Developing an Extension Palate: Connecting Enology Research with Industry Practice,” at the Joint 77th ASEV National Conference and 50th ASEV Eastern Section Annual Conference in Boise, Idaho, on June 15-18, 2026.
