LOCATION HEADQUARTERS: Bakersfield, Kern County, California
The Cooperative Extension (CE) advisor (an academic appointment with research and extension responsibilities) for viticulture will conduct a locally based extension, education and applied research program to develop best practices for economic table grape vineyard management and to minimize the environmental effects of production and cultural practices. Work will cover a broad range of areas considering the impact on fruit quality and yield in relation to: vine growth and development, table grape production, irrigation/water management, vine nutrition, rootstock evaluation, vineyard management systems, automation and mechanization, crop/fruit development, integrated pest and disease management (including soil pests) and post-harvest handling. 

Key stakeholders include the California Table Grape Commission, commercial farms (both large and small), pest control advisers, allied industries, public agencies, and consumers. The primary geographic area of responsibility for the position is Kern County but the CE advisor will also be expected to collaborate with CE advisors in neighboring counties, particularly Tulare and Kings Counties to address complex issues through a team approach. 

This position is co-funded by the California Table Grape Commission for a period of five years with intent for co-funded renewal. The CE advisor will initially be appointed to a term of up to two years with an academic review taking place prior to the end of this initial term. If the review reflects that the incumbent’s performance is of high quality, as evaluated by UC ANR procedures, the CE advisor will be offered a second definite term appointment of two years, subject to renewal based on the availability of funding and satisfactory performance of the academic. This co-funded position is not eligible for indefinite status.

Academic Expectations:
All UC ANR CE advisors are responsible for performance in the areas of 1) applied research and creative activity, 2) extension of knowledge and information, 3) professional competence and activity and 4) University and public service. 

Major Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement effective UC ANR Cooperative Extension applied research and educational programs to address the identified priority needs of stakeholders 
    that are consistent with ANR’s Strategic Vision and ANR initiatives http://ucanr.edu/sites/StrategicInitiatives/ 
  • Develop and implement applied research designed to monitor changes and solve locally relevant problems. Collaborate with the California Table Grape Commission 
    to conduct and report regular needs assessments to identify and address priority issues or problems relevant to the local stakeholder groups being served.
  • Represent UC ANR in a professional manner.

Communication:

  • Disseminate useful, science-based information to inform stakeholders, using extension methods that are responsive to stakeholder 
    needs and appropriate for the audience and situation.
  • Evaluate programs and report accomplishments, results, and potential or actual impacts to scientific and lay audiences.
  • Effectively use online communication methods and associated software programs to support research and instruction.
  • Actively advocate for UC ANR program awareness and support.

Collaboration, Teamwork & Flexibility:

  • Develop collaborative teams with other UC ANR academics, including CE specialists, AES faculty, CE Advisors and/or others, to address priority issues for UC ANR.
  • Interact with UC ANR Program Teams and others within the research/extension network to develop, strengthen and expand program goals.

Professional Development & Lifelong Learning:

  •  Maintain and promote Cooperative Extension’s credibility by participating in professional organizations and collaborating with government agencies, community partners, 
    allied industry groups, policy makers and other organizations by providing independent science-based information and leadership.

Education & Experience:
Required Qualifications
Programmatic competence

  • A minimum of an earned master’s degree or higher is required prior to the appointment start date, preferably in plant science, viticulture, pomology or closely related disciplines such as water/soil science, plant pathology, entomology and others with experience in plant science. Education, training, or experience in viticulture is highly preferred, and relevant experience in other permanent cropping systems will be considered. 
  • The CE advisor must possess or obtain a Qualified Pesticide Applicator Certificate (QAC) or License prior to applying or supervising the application of any pesticide.
    Communication
  • Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills are required. 
    Collaboration, Teamwork & Flexibility
  • The ability to build partnerships and to work with multidisciplinary teams to address production and complex challenges is required. 
  • Willingness and ability to embrace change as clientele and organizational needs evolve.
    Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated ability in applied agricultural research and extension is preferred. 

Salary:
