The entire ASEV joins in expressing our sympathies to the family of Bob Steinhauer, who passed away Friday, November 28, 2025.
His career spanning over five decades, Steinhauer reshaped the landscape of modern winegrowing, particularly in vineyard management. His leadership extended beyond vineyard operations; he was the first viticulturist to serve as President of the American Society for Enology and Viticulture (ASEV) in 1985-1986, and he chaired the Program Development Committee for the Unified Wine & Grape Symposium in 2006–2008. His contributions earned him numerous accolades, including the ASEV Merit Award in 2008, and his legacy is honored through various awards and recognitions in the viticulture community.
Steinhauer’s career milestones included significant roles at Beringer Vineyards, where he helped expand the company’s farming footprint and played a central role in developing renowned wine programs. Beyond his technical expertise, Steinhauer’s vibrant personality and storytelling abilities left a lasting impression on colleagues and the next generation of winegrowers. His work continues to influence the wine industry today, and he is remembered as a visionary and dedicated professional who deeply loved the land and his craft.
