From Research to a Wider Conversation

What happens after research is published? Sometimes, the conversation is just getting started.
A recent study published in the American Journal of Enology and Viticulture (AJEV) is a great example of how research can move beyond the pages of a scientific journal and reach the people making decisions throughout the wine and grape industry.
“Economics of Winegrape Adaptation: Technology Adoption, Cultivar Selection, or Migration” examines a timely challenge: how winegrape growers can respond to increasingly extreme heat and when different adaptation strategies make economic sense. Following an ASEV press release highlighting the research, the study attracted attention from wine industry, mainstream and agricultural media, including Wine Business, Wine Industry Advisor, Wine Industry Insight, and Ag Alert.
The interest demonstrates something important about sharing scientific research: its value extends well beyond the research community.
When findings address the questions facing growers, winemakers and other industry professionals, they can inform decisions, spark new conversations and help a broader audience understand how science is responding to real-world challenges. Media coverage can extend that reach even further, translating research into stories that connect with people who may never encounter the original journal article.
That connection between science and practice is central to AJEV and ASEV’s mission to advance the exchange of information and support research and education. And it is also an opportunity for researchers.
Your work may have relevance to a much larger audience than you realize. Publishing in AJEV gives research a place in the scientific record, but it can also give important findings a pathway to the people who can learn from them, build upon them and put them into practice.
Have research that can contribute to the conversation? Consider submitting your work to AJEV and help move wine and grape science forward.
