Job Description:

DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION
Viticulture and Enology (VEN) is an academic (education, research, and outreach) unit in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. The VEN Davis Vineyards are special facilities devoted to the cultivation of grapevines for research and teaching purposes and for the production of grapes to be used for the Enology classes throughout the academic year.

Job Summary

Under general supervision, responsible for providing direct field support for research projects including general vineyard operation, care of vineyard and performing skilled or specialized operational level cultural duties. Perform general nursery duties such as propagating standard varieties of plant materials, collecting, caring for and germinating seeds, maintaining cuttings of plants, and controlling environmental conditions. Perform specialized cultural work such as irrigating, applying insecticides, herbicide an fertilizers; and may keep routine operational records Operate small and large wheel tractors and track laying tractors, and forklifts including but not limited to specialized farm equipment such as hedging equipment, sprayers for pesticides and herbicides, weed abatement implements and all-terrain vehicles.

Salary:

$20.92 – $29.30/HR.

HOURS
8:00 am-5:00 pm, Monday-Friday

Physical Requirements:

-Lift equipment and materials weighing up to 50lbs.
-Sit for two hours at a time operating field equipment.
-Perform repetitious field work.

Work Environment

-Work flexible schedule and occasional overtime including weekends, evenings or nights to operational needs.

-Work outdoors in all types of weather.

-Ability to tolerate field and greenhouse conditions during extremes of hot and cold temperatures

-Eligible for EH&S certificates in forklift operations.

-Valid California driver’s license to drive to vineyards.

-Restricted vacation during peak periods.

Qualifications:

Required:
-Experience in pruning and vine training of many diverse collections of vines including wild grape species, rootstocks, wine and table grapes.

-Agricultural experience to operate heavy and/or complex agricultural equipment including but not limited to wheel tractors and track laying tractors, forklifts, and specialized farm equipment such as hedging equipment, sprayers for pesticides and herbicides, weed abatement implements.

-Experience with grapevine propagation including herbaceous and woody cuttings, mist propagation, and bench-grafting.

-Knowledge of pesticides/herbicides application in accordance with local regulations.

-Interpersonal and communication skills to work with contract laborers in field oriented tasks; to maintain good working relationships with winery staff, outside growers and customers; and to facilitate timely and proper grape handling.

PREFERRED
-Experience maintaining vineyard conditions as needed for teaching and production.
-Bilingual in English/Spanish.
-Skills to perform basic arithmetic calculations.
-Writing skills.
