Brief Job Description:

The Food Science & Human Nutrition (Midwest Grape & Wine Industry Institute) at Iowa State University currently seeks qualified applicants for a Research Associate II. This position will oversee the wine service lab and facilitate the Iowa wine industry’s Iowa Quality Wine Consortium (IQWC) testing as well as assist industry members through research, outreach, and extension.

This position assists the wine industry members in Iowa and the Midwest region in an effort to produce regionally specific high quality wines. Responsibilities include oversight of the service lab, IQ lab testing and sensory program; and collaboration with Institute staff to provide education and training on relevant topics important to wine industry members at workshops, short courses, and industry meetings. Other duties include providing technical assistance by making proactive winery visits, and preparing and presenting course materials. The successful candidate will possess strong interpersonal skills and have the ability to work independently. The candidate will be able to present and interact with industry members within Iowa and the Midwest region, and at regional and national conferences. Excellent written and oral communication skills are essential for success in this position. This position will travel on an as needed basis, which includes mostly in Iowa and the Midwest region and work may be required on occasional weekends.

Required Education and Experience:

Bachelors Degree and 1 year of experience.

Preferred Education and Experience:

• Bachelors or Masters Degree in related discipline
  (i.e., Food/Fermentation Science, Enology and Viticulture or directly related).
• Winemaking experience, research scale or in a commercial setting.
• Experience with and maintenance of lab chemical analysis equipment for procedures relating to juice/wine.
• Experience with and knowledge of experimental design and analysis of results.
• Experience assisting with or conducting workshops, short courses and industry meetings.
• Experience supervising and directing daily activities of support personnel.
• Experience working with wine industry professionals.

This is a 2 year term appointment with the possibility of renewal.
