Program Director/Instructor Viticulture & Enology

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Grayson College is seeking an individual with demonstrated instructional skills. This is a full-time, 9-month contract position (with possible summer contracts as well), in the Viticulture and Enology Program. Responsibilities will begin August 18, 2014. Appointments are contingent upon funding and Board approval.

DEPARTMENT/PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Viticulture and Enology Program, at Grayson College, consists of a single Program Director/Instructor and several adjunct faculty. This is the only community college viticulture and enology program in Texas. The instructional program is comprised of the T.V. Munson Center, the T.V. Munson vineyard (5 acres), and the T.V. Munson instructional winery at Ivanhoe, Texas. These facilities offer “learning by doing” application in the various laboratories of the programs.
GC offers courses at the main campus in Denison, Texas and in online formats as well. While assignments are primarily on campus, please note that the College reserves the right of assignment to any location, and that assignments could involve any combination of day or evening classes. Instructors assume responsibility for maintaining currency in the field and for updating existing courses and developing new curricula; participating in the assessment of student learning outcomes; managing labs; and participating in community outreach on behalf of the College.

POSITION DESCRIPTION
Grayson College Viticulture & Enology faculty will prepare students for employment in the wine industry through instruction and program development. As the program director/instructor for this program the faculty will:

  • Instruct the lecture and laboratory classes in the Viticulture & Enology program which focus on the following: Wine Laws & Regulation; Principles of Enology I & II; Principles of Viticulture I & II; Grapevine Biology; Analysis of Must & Wine; Winegrowing Regions of the World; Grape & Wine Chemistry; Wine Types & Sensory Evaluation; Wine Marketing; and Internships.
  • Develop curriculum for use in traditional lecture-lab formats, as well as day and evening specialty short courses; develop course and program level student learning outcomes (SLOs); conduct learning assessment projects; maintain office hours for student counseling including instruction and program related student contact.
  • Develop and instruct workforce education courses and seminars for the Southeastern wine/grape industry.
  • Schedule courses in a manner that optimizes student enrollment and contribute to student success; effectively market the program for recruitment of appropriate students; serve as a knowledge resource for current students and performing outreach to potential students.
  • Ensure instructional content articulates with relevant industry certification.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing; and effectively use appropriate technology and equipment.
  • Develop contacts with industry groups and local employers. This includes coordinating and managing an industry-represented Viticulture & Enology Advisory Committee that assists in maintaining and aligning the program content to match with employable knowledge and skills.
  • Be an active member of the wine industry community and an advocate for the GC Viticulture & Enology Program including attending industry meetings and maintaining currency in subject matter.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required:

  • Master’s degree in a field or major related to Viticulture & Enology
  • Prior college level teaching experience at a community college or university level
  • Knowledge of current trends in wine studies field and strategies for working with multicultural and re-entry students
  • Professional / community involvement in wine industry
  • Practical experience in wine industry
  • Expertise in enology and wine making
  • A strong passion for wine, wine appreciation, wine sales and teaching the art and science of wine making

COMPENSATION PACKAGE

  • Starting Salary Range: $39,883 – $53,395 (9-month contract) (2013/14 Faculty Salary Schedule). Teaching experience, other related professional experience, and academic degrees determine salary placement on a schedule.

  • Field trips and/or guest lectures, if any.
