Fermentation Sciences at Appalachian State University invites applications for a full time nine-month non-tenure track faculty position at the rank of a lecturer, beginning January 1, 2018. The successful candidate will teach classes and laboratory exercises in Fermentation Sciences depending on departmental needs and relevant experience. Administrative duties include student advising, mentoring, and support of undergraduate student research. A successful candidate will demonstrate excellent communicational skills for a classroom setting, advanced knowledge of fermentation sciences, and have experience or knowledge necessary to instruct courses in the field of fermented foods and beverages. Professional and academic experience specific to fermented beverage production (beer, wine, or spirits) is critical. Faculty and Staff within Fermentation Sciences seek a team member to help diversify the student experience at Appalachian and contribute to the strength of the academic mission as well as the research objectives of the department. The successful candidate must be prepared to contribute to the growth and development of Fermentation Sciences through course development, student engagement and mentorship, and industry outreach.

Applicants must possess a PhD or Master’s degree in a discipline directly related to Fermentation Sciences (e.g. Food Science, Biology, Chemistry, Beverage Science, Engineering) and demonstrated experience in the field. Preference will be given to applicants with experience teaching and mentoring students. Teaching assignments will vary based on departmental needs. The candidate is expected to contribute to the Fermentation Sciences mission for outreach and service learning. He/she will hold office hours for students and perform the normal duties associated with teaching, including student advisement.

The Appalachian State University Department of Fermentation Sciences offers a B.S. degree in Fermentation Sciences and supports a concentration in Fermentation Sciences within the Department of Chemistry. The new undergraduate program was established in 2012 at Appalachian State University and supports a rapidly growing industry in the Southeastern US.
