The Fermentation Sciences Program at Appalachian State University invites applications for a full time staff position beginning on or after June 30th, 2015.  A successful candidate will demonstrate advanced knowledge of fermentation sciences and relevant teaching experience

Applicants must possess a M.S. in a discipline related to Fermentation Sciences (e.g. Food Science, Biology, Chemistry, Beverage Science, Engineering, Horticulture, Crop Science) and demonstrated research or professional experience in the field.  Preference will be given to applicants with experience in research and/or teaching in the area of brewing science / brewing operations and technology.  Academic or professional experience related to fermented dairy, meats, and vegetable products will also be preferentially considered.

The successful candidate will teach 6 to 9 contact hours in Fermentation Sciences per semester; teaching assignments will vary based on programmatic needs and professional background of the instructor.  He/she will hold office hours for students and perform the normal duties associated with teaching.  The candidate is expected to contribute to the Fermentation Sciences mission for outreach and service learning and should have experience with writing and reporting on competitive research and development grants.  The position will report directly to the Director of the Fermentation Sciences Program and will include administrative support related to program management, fund management and purchasing, grant management, and academic assessment.  The Fermentation Sciences Instructor and Research Assistant position is a unique opportunity for the professional interested in advanced instruction and student mentorship, scientific research and scholarly pursuits, and a high level of industry engagement.

The Appalachian State University Fermentation Sciences Program offers a B.S. degree in Fermentation Sciences under the College of Arts and Sciences, and supports a concentration in Fermentation Sciences within the Department of Chemistry.  The undergraduate program was established in 2012 at Appalachian State University and supports a rapidly growing industry in the Southeastern US.  The program hosts a state of the art pilot plant and analytical services laboratory for academic research and industry services.  Faculty and staff within Fermentation Sciences seek a team member to help diversify the student experience at Appalachian and contribute to the strength of the academic mission as well as the research objectives of the program.  A successful candidate must be prepared to contribute to the Fermentation Sciences program through student engagement and mentorship, industry outreach, and program development.
