GENERAL DESCRIPTION: 

Develop, teach, arrange, and promote Enology courses for the Two Year Associate of Applied Science Degree Program in Viticulture and Enology. Participate in collaborative promotional programs for the Southern Oregon Wine Institute at Umpqua Community College. Oversee the management of a new teaching winery and commercial scale winery incubator.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide high quality instruction in Enology.
  • Lead and coordinate enology curriculum development and delivery, including traditional face-to face, online and hybrid modalities, and other related professional activities and industry training for the Enology aspect of the Viticulture and Enology program in coordination with the Southern Oregon Wine Institute.
  • Manage of the new Teaching Winery, tasting room and commercial scale winery incubator. Ensure compliance with all local, state, federal laws and college policies concerning winery operations.
  • Work closely with business and industry leaders, workforce and economic development partners, and the campus community to promote and utilize the Southern Oregon Wine Institute at Umpqua Community College.
  • Provide leadership in the development and delivery of seminars, workshops and symposia relevant to the regional wine industry.
  • Coordinate with the UCC Special Events Department to maximize the use of the Teaching Winery for special events.
  • Recruit and advise Viticulture and Enology students planning courses of study at UCC and transfer institutions.
  • Establish, assess, and revise course objectives consistent with appropriate course content for each class.
  • Establish and assess student outcomes, consistent with college guidelines and course content for each class.
  • Establish and assess program outcomes, maintaining appropriate records.
  • Keep regular office hours and serve as an effective team member within the department, the division, and with the college community in committee meetings and other duties as assigned, and with the industry cluster at large.
  • Participate in professional growth activities.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduate degree in Enology or closely related field preferred; Bachelor’s degree in Enology or closely related field required; Associate’s degree with at least 5 years of professional winemaking experience may be substituted for the Bachelor’s degree.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate in a clear, effective manner (oral and written) required.
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize appropriate instructional technology and methodology in teaching and learning required.
  • Professional winemaking experience required.
  • Program/resource development, Community college teaching and/or Extension Service experience preferred.
  • Equivalent combination of education and wine industry related experience will be considered.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Gripping hands and fingers, hearing voice conversation, lifting/carrying 0-14 pounds, standing, standing long periods, and walking occur in this job daily.
  • Bending, color identification, kneeling, lifting/carrying 15-60 pounds, reaching, sitting, exposure to chemicals, wearing safety glasses, working weekend labs, and working with solvents, grease, oils, and inks occur regularly but not daily.
  • limbing ladders, crouching, hammering, hearing alarms, stooping, twisting body, exposure to fumes, exposure to noxious odor, exposure to smoke, wearing cloth, rubber, or plastic gloves, and working with electricity occur rarely within the work year.
