The College of Agricultural Sciences is seeking an individual trained in enology with commercial winemaking experience to join our dynamic and successful Extension Horticulture unit. The individual in this position will provide leadership within the Extension enology program, and support and implement applied enology research to benefit the Pennsylvania wine industry. The successful individual will be housed in the Food Science department and work closely with research and extension faculty in the Food Science and Plant Science departments on issues related to wine production and quality.

While this is a 100% extension position, the successful applicant is expected to engage with research and extension colleagues in pursuing industry, state and federal research and/or extension funds that support the needs of the wine industry. As a critical member of the Penn State Grape and Enology group and the Horticulture Extension Unit, the individual will develop and participate in educational programs that address the wine industry’s needs. The individual must be able to work effectively in a team and with diverse populations and audiences.

The successful candidate will participate in interdisciplinary collaborations across multiple disciplines and institutions. This individual is expected to assist the statewide industry in improving overall wine quality; therefore, the position requires considerable travel throughout the Commonwealth. Extension educators represent the College of Agricultural Sciences in interpreting, applying, and disseminating the latest enology research findings. The individual will report to the Assistant Director of Extension Programs for Horticulture with input from the Food Science Department Head. The successful candidate will be expected to develop original content, to engage audiences through innovative educational methods such as online courses, videos, mobile apps, and electronic and traditional publications, and in-person presentations that are consistent with the Penn State Extension’s vision of expanding the reach of, and access to, education.

The candidate must therefore be comfortable delivering education in-person, and with workplace software, and must become proficient in online education, including through the innovative “Atlas” system (http://agsci.psu.edu/atlas). This job will be filled as a level 3, or level 4, depending upon the successful candidate’s competencies, education, and experience.

Typically requires a Master’s degree or higher plus two years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience for a level 3. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs. Excellent verbal and written communications skills required in English and valued in Spanish. Candidates must possess teaching skills, interpersonal skills, ability to build effective working relationships with colleagues and clientele, and work as an active member of a team. The candidate must be organized and able to manage multiple projects simultaneously. Proficiency in the use of computer software packages such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint is required. Must have the ability to carry equipment, educational materials, and supplies, with or without accommodation. Must possess a valid driver’s license and use of a private automobile.

Since this position requires that you operate a motor vehicle as part of your job duties, successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required in addition to standard background checks.
