Viticulture and Enology
Department Chair California State University, Fresno is an

The successful candidate will hold tenure at the rank of either associate or full professor in the Department of Viticulture and Enology (VE). The successful candidate will initially be given an academic year administrative assignment as department chair, for which the appropriate release time will be provided. Department chairs serve at the pleasure of the President. The successful candidate is also expected to teach courses in the undergraduate and/or graduate programs in viticulture or enology. Opportunities exist for a reduced teaching load to conduct research and for summer salary supplement.
The successful candidate will be expected to provide leadership
for administering, developing, and operating programs in the
department including, but not limited to: (1) consultation with
faculty on policy matters, plans and procedures; (2) planning and
administration of academic programs including the scheduling,
evaluation and enhancement of instruction; (3) formulation,
development, and implementation of strategic plans; (4)
preparation and administration of department budgets; (5)
implementation and adherence to all university policies and
procedures, especially those relating to academic department
administration; (6) preparation of required reports, position
descriptions, and hiring requests; (7) mentorship of all faculty,
particularly probationary faculty and lecturers, to optimize
teaching effectiveness and promote assessment of student
learning; (8) formulation and implementation of integrated
strategic plans for academic programs through consultation with
administrators, faculty, staff, and industry partners; (9) direct
and effective collaboration with the Viticulture and Enology
Research Center (VERC) Director as she/he plans and administers
research programs within VERC and in collaboration with other
research centers within the Jordan College, (10) collaboration
with the University Agricultural Laboratory (UAL) Manager to
provide financial and operational direction for the campus’
vineyards including recommendations on planting, harvesting and
processing grapes, as well the Fresno State Winery operation;
(11) develop effective liaisons with California’s viticulture and
enology industry; (12) teach courses and engage in research
activities appropriate for expertise when compatible with other
responsibilities; (13) performance of additional university
requirements for all faculty, and (14) other responsibilities as
assigned by the Jordan College Dean.
It is the goal of the Department of Viticulture and Enology to be
a world-class center of excellence that effectively meets the
educational and research needs of students and the broader grape
and wine community. The Department provides a diverse group of
undergraduate and graduate students with a practical hands-on
education through its degree, certificate, and solution-focused
research programs. The Department currently serves approximately
150 students through its MS in Viticulture and Enology, BS in
Enology, BS in Viticulture, and Certificate of special Study in
Enology. These academic programs are supported by a strong
faculty and staff with a commitment to education, research, and
industry outreach and service.
The Department’s strong research program is supported by the
Viticulture and Enology Research Center (VERC), the Jordan
College Graduate Lab, the newly –opened Jordan
Agricultural Research Center, the Olam Sensory Laboratory, the
University Agricultural Laboratory (UAL) and the V.E. Petrucci
Library. VERC provides research laboratory space, major
instrumentation, outreach event support, endowed student research
assistantships, and industry supported research chairs. The UAL
includes a 120 acre vineyard, raisin processing plant, and the
nation’s first commercial winery located within a college campus.
The V.E. Petrucci Library, a collection of Henry Madden Library
embedded within the Department, is dedicated to resources related
to viticulture and enology. Librarian research support helps
students, faculty, and members of the industry access and use
these resources. For more than a century, Fresno State’s
viticulture and enology programs and our students have benefitted
from close connections and collaboration with the grape and wine
industry and our strong, involved, and successful alumni
throughout California and the world.
Required Education:
An earned doctorate (Ph.D.) or equivalent from an accredited
institution; disciplines may include, but are not limited to:
botany, biochemistry, plant physiology, chemistry, horticulture,
viticulture, enology, microbiology, or food science.
Required Experience:
An established record of teaching and research activities
applicable to the viticulture and enology industry at the
university level. Demonstrated ability to plan, budget, and
manage an academic department. The successful candidate must have
the ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, and students
from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
Competitive candidates for appointment at the rank of professor
require a sustained record of outstanding leadership in the
profession, and a strong record of scholarly publications,
teaching, and professional activities.
