FACULTY POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

Assistant or Associate Specialist in Cooperative Extension for Viticulture at Oakville Station CA and the Department of Viticulture and Enology University of California, Davis.

The Department of Viticulture and Enology has a research, teaching and outreach mission to develop and disseminate comprehensive basic and applied knowledge regarding the production of winegrapes and is internationally recognized as a premier center of excellence in these fields. A Cooperative Extension (CE) Specialist is being recruited to conduct original applied research with the goal of achieving more sustainable management and production of winegrapes. The successful candidate will bring visibility and leadership to CE campus and county based academics and other researchers and educators involved in the study of winegrapes. Research and outreach activities will be closely integrated with UC Agriculture and Natural Resources (ANR), county-based CE academics and clientele as well as campus based CE and ladder rank faculty. The appointee will be a faculty member of the Department of Viticulture and Enology at the University of California, Davis and will be stationed at the UC Davis Oakville Station, Oakville, CA, in the heart of Napa Valley, about 40 minutes from campus.

Responsibilities: This is a full time, career-track appointment that includes the expectation that the appointee will conduct mission-oriented research and engage in outreach that advances the mission of the Department of Viticulture and Enology and ANR. The focus of this position will be on winegrape production in California. Accordingly, applicants should have the professional background necessary to conduct original research on winegrapes.

Extension Teaching: A person in this position is expected to provide leadership as a liaison between campus-based researchers, CE campus and county based academics, and clientele groups such as growers, pest control advisors and other agricultural industry professionals. This will include providing information to clientele through print publications, web-based resources and in-person presentations, and serving as a resource for other CE academics.

Applied Research: The successful candidate will: 1) coordinate applied research related to winegrape production; 2) conduct, and publish the results of applied research or other creative activities designed to resolve management and production problems; and 3) emphasize environmentally sound, integrated approaches to grape growing. Areas of emphasis may include any of the following: crop physiology, plant nutrition or plant water relations, environmental sensing or management, cropping, and systems ecology.

Professional Competence and Activity: The candidate will be expected to participate in professional society activities including presenting papers at national and international meetings; reviewing manuscripts and grant proposals in his/her area of expertise; and establishing productive working relationships with scientists and extension personnel in other states and countries. The goal would be to gain national and international recognition for scholarly contributions to the science and practice of viticulture, as he/she advances to higher ranks in the UC system.

University and Public Service: The candidate will serve on committees that support the operation of the Oakville Station, as well as University committees, ANR, advisory councils and boards appropriate to the candidate’s area of expertise. The candidate should ultimately be recognized as a knowledgeable person who can provide reliable and unbiased information on grape growing in the state of California.

Qualifications: Ph.D. degree in viticulture, pomology, horticulture, plant science, soil science or other closely related discipline is required. Additionally, knowledge, experience, interest and/or academic coursework related to viticulture or related fields, e.g., pomology, is highly desired. The successful candidate must have a record that documents productivity in research as evidenced by publications in peer‐reviewed journals.

Salary: Commensurate with experience.
